L-5-MTHF Capsules by Seeking Health provide 25,500 mcg DFE of pure non-racemic L-methylfolate, an active coenzyme form of folate. Folate is a water-soluble B vitamin that occurs naturally in food, such as leafy green vegetables, citrus fruits, dried beans, and peas. The methylated form, L-5-methylfolate (L-5-MTHF) requires no additional metabolic steps to be used by the body, and is often the preferred choice for those with absorption or metabolic defects. L-5-MTHF efficiently supports methylation, DNA biosynthesis, homocysteine metabolism, and nervous system function. L-5-MTHF is easily absorbed and used by cells. It is the predominant folate in circulation and the only form of folate that can cross the blood-brain barrier.*
Scientific research has demonstrated that higher strengths of L-5-MTHF may also support healthy neurotransmitter formation. A key cofactor is needed for both serotonin and dopamine metabolism. It is called BH4 or tetrahydrobiopterin. It appears that L-5-MTHF may help to both make more BH4 and also regenerate BH4 that has been previously used to make neurotransmitters. By doing so, L-5-MTHF plays an important role in assuring normal neurotransmitter formation takes place.*
Our 25,500 mcg DFE capsule was designed for healthcare practitioners to recommend to their clients who they have identified as requiring extra support for methylation or neurotransmitter metabolism. This higher strength of folate is reserved for healthcare practitioners or clients who have been guided by their healthcare practitioners to address their increased needs. If you or your practitioner are concerned with getting too many methyl groups when taking a higher strength of L-5-MTHF, chemistry shows that the ingestion of higher levels of both glycine (an amino acid found in collagen) and niacin may support normal levels of methylation reactions.*
When first taking L-methylfolate, side effects are possible due to inefficient methylation, pre-existing inflammation or possible genetic deficiencies. Consult your health care professional for testing to determine the proper strength of L-methylfolate for your individual needs. Niacin may help to support folate processing, and may be helpful to have on hand to support the body's metabolism of methylfolate if side effects occur. Glycine, an amino acid found in collagen, may also assist with supporting balanced levels of methylation when taking higher servings of methylated nutrients like L-5-MTHF.*
For a non-methylated form of folate that is still well-absorbed and utilized, consider our Folinic Acid Lozenges or Folinic Acid Capsules. For additional methylation support, consider our Active B12 with L-5-MTHF.*
